Geographic information system (GIS) Mapping

GIS reveals deeper insights into data, such as patterns, relationships, and situations helping users make smarter decisions. Maps can simplify and communicate information, perform analysis, and share complex spatial  information in an actionable way to your team.

Did you know that GIS is a Canadian invention? Roger Tomlinson’s pioneering work developing the Canada Geographic Information System resulted in the first computerized GIS in the world in 1963.  He envisioned using computers to merge natural resource data from all provinces. He also gave GIS its name. Today that vision allows us to map spatial concentrations, and reveal insights that a spreadsheet simply can’t reveal.

Where We Work: The Geography of Workplaces in Canada (by Industry)

This map seeks to highlight the geographic diversity of industry workforce participation in different parts of Canada. Compiled from updated data extracted from the 2016 Canadian census, it provides one of the most comprehensive pictures of where those working in different industries throughout Canada are concentrated…or are relatively uncommon. It can then be used as the basis for a discussion over the continuing role of workplace (and workforce) geography in the development and growth of Canada’s economy.
