December 23, 2024 —Pollara’s annual year-end poll shows Donald Trump dominated the news in Canada in 2024, as three of the five most closely followed news stories revolved around Trump. Trump’s election win was the year’s most followed news story – and was also the news story that made Canadians angriest.
| News Stories that Made Canadians the Angriest in 2024 | |
| Donald Trump wins US presidential election | 31% |
| Trump threatens 25% tariffs on Canada | 25% |
| Israel-Hamas war | 12% |
| War in Ukraine | 12% |
On the other side, stories that made Canadians happiest in 2024 include the Bank of Canada cutting interest rates (18%), the total solar eclipse (14%), Summer McIntosh dominating at the Olympics (11%), and Taylor Swift’s live shows (8%).
Our year end poll also asked Canadians what news stories they actively searched for in 2024, and we find big age differences. Younger Canadians were interested in the Drake / Kendrick Lamar feud and Raygun’s “breakdancing” at the Olympics – two stories that few older Canadians paid attention to.
