Canadians warming to King Charles and the monarchy

May 25, 2025 — Fresh polling by Pollara Strategic Insights leading up to the opening of Parliament shows that 48% of Canadians believe it is good for Canada’s sovereignty for King Charles to deliver the throne speech while only 22% think this will be a bad thing for Canadian sovereignty.

Quebec is the only province where a plurality see more negative effects of King Charles III delivering the throne speech, but they are divided (33% good / 36% bad).

Canadians are rallying behind King Charles personally, with 45% feeling positively towards him and 23% negatively. This represents an 8-point increase in positive sentiment since he ascended to the throne in September 2022, with his negatives down 10 points.

This has fuelled a growth in support for Canada’s future as a constitutional monarchy. More Canadians (45%) now want Canada to remain a constitutional monarchy than end this connection with the crown (39%). This marks a reversal from 2022 when 44% favoured ending the monarchy and only 35% favoured maintaining it.
