Rage Index, October 2024: Almost half of Canadians feel angry towards Donald Trump

October 3, 2024 —Pollara’s latest Rage Index looks south of the border and finds 46% of Canadians feel angry or annoyed when they think about the US election, compared to just 10% who feel happy or pleased.

Despite this gloomy outlook, Canadians are actually feeling better about the presidential election now than last June, when 53% were angry or annoyed. This improved outlook is largely due to the entry of Kamala Harris into the race. Canadians are over three times more likely to feel positive rather than negative emotions towards her (62% vs. 18%), and she excites 32% of Canadians, compared to just 2% who are excited by Joe Biden.

Her opponent elicits strong emotions, with 46% of Canadians angry towards Trump. This includes 72% of NDP voters, 70% of Liberal voters, and 25% of Conservative voters.

Canadians are following the US election closely, as the majority are familiar with VP candidates JD Vance (63%) and Tim Walz (57%). This significantly higher than familiarity levels with many prominent Canadian politicians including Scott Moe (35%), Canada’s longest serving Premier.
