February 27, 2025 – As part of Pollara’s 40th Anniversary Survey Series, our February Report provides an in-depth retrospective look at Quebec and the national unity issue in Canada. Based on fresh survey data as well as data collected over the past four decades, we provide an analysis of Quebec’s evolving political landscape and relationship with Canada, separatist sentiment, and broader Canadian perspectives on Quebec’s distinct status and powers within the federation.
The findings reveal significant shifts in public opinion, including reduced opposition amongst Quebecers to the concept of independence, despite – or maybe because of – rising skepticism that that it will actually happen. Notably, the province faces a conundrum: while a slim majority of Quebecers still oppose sovereignty and holding a referendum about it, the PQ – a separatist party – is currently leading provincial polls. And, these attitudes are at play against a national backdrop where there is a growing resistance outside of Quebec to grant special accommodations or powers to la belle province.
