Matt Smith

Executive Vice President, West

Matt brings two decades of research and communications leadership to Pollara, with a dynamic blend of public, private, and non-profit sector experiences.

Most recently, Matt served for two years as Chief of Staff to BC Premier David Eby, including his re-election in October 2024. In this role, he led a government-wide team, developed key policy legislation, engaged with communities and industries, and launched strategic communications campaigns. He was a trusted advisor to the Premier, Cabinet, and Caucus on public opinion and political strategy.

Previously, Matt was President of Strategic Communications (Stratcom), a leading research, engagement, and fundraising firm operating in Canada and the UK. Beyond overseeing the company’s day-to-day operations and long-term planning with the CEO, he co-designed and executed the City of Toronto’s highly successful VaxTO engagement campaign, led successful research and voter contact work for Gregor Robertson and Vision Vancouver, and guided the development of Unifor’s name, logo, and branding.

Throughout his career, Matt has consistently championed innovation – bringing Hustle peer-to-peer texting to Canada, collaborating with US experts to develop the first microtargeting scores for Vision Vancouver and the BCNDP, and utilizing RDD list texting to build powerful lookalike audiences in Facebook.

Matt holds an M.A. from the University of Toronto in Electoral Geography and certificates in MBA Essentials and Negotiations from the London School of Economics. His work has been recognized in MacLean’s The New Power List, Vancouver Magazine’s Power 50, and Business in Vancouver’s BC500.
