75% of Canadians support retaliatory tariffs

March 5, 2025 — Pollara’s Trump Tracker shows anger towards Donald Trump growing, as the President brings in tariffs on Canadian goods. The percentage of Canadians “angry” towards Trump has risen from 51% to 58% over the past month.

Overall, 14% feel positively and 76% feel negatively towards Trump. While Conservative voters are still more positive towards him, over the last month the share of them who feel positively towards Trump has fallen from 44% to 29%.

As anger builds, Canadians are in a mood to fight back against US tariffs: 75% support and 15% oppose retaliatory tariffs on US products. Moreover, the majority of Canadians support removing US alcohol from liquor stores (77% support) and punishing Trump advisor Elon Musk via Tesla tariffs and cancelled contrast (74% support).

While more Canadians expect Prime Minister Trudeau and his likely successor to oppose Trump’s demands than to do what Trump demands, they are not so sure that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre would take this approach:

If they were PM Would do what Trump demands Would strongly oppose his demands
Justin Trudeau 27% 46%
Pierre Poilievre 41% 27%
Jagmeet Singh 21% 42%
Mark Carney 17% 44%
Chrystia Freeland 16% 44%
