April 7, 2026 – Pollara’s “Alberta Spotlight” shows support for Alberta separatism rising to 27%, the highest level recorded in over 5 years of tracking. Furthermore, one-in-five Albertans voting to remain in Canada would consider voting to separate to “send a message to Ottawa”. If they followed through, support for separatism would rise over 40%.
Despite this, Albertans still show a strong attachment to Canada, with 84% of Albertans “proud to be Canadian”. Notably, the majority (58%) of those who would vote to separate are still proud to be Canadian.
Pollara’s “Alberta Spotlight” also measures familiarity and sentiment towards 17 federal, provincial, and municipal politicians in Alberta and finds:
- Familiarity and sentiment towards Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre are nearly identical to each other in Alberta.
- While Danielle Smith is better known than Naheed Nenshi, he enjoys a higher net sentiment score (Smith: -14, Nenshi: +6).
- New Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas enjoys a +37 sentiment score in Calgary, while impressions are more divided on Edmonton’s new Mayor Andrew Knack (+4).
