Food Banks Canada’s 2025 Poverty Report Card sees Food Insecurity reach Record High

September 22, 2025 – Food Banks Canada’s 2025 Poverty Report Card – developed in partnership with Pollara Strategic Insights – assigns Canada a D on poverty reduction, as food insecurity reaches an all-time high.

After years of worsening hardship, there are early signs that Canada may be turning a corner. Indeed, new programs are gaining traction and bold action can cut food insecurity in half by 2030.

Nevertheless, poverty and food insecurity are still at crisis levels, and millions are being left behind. Canada’s overall grade on this year’s report card remains low, reflecting the urgent need for stronger, faster action in order to achieve necessary and meaningful progress.

  • Food insecurity has reached a record high, with 1 in 4 Canadians now affected, a staggering 38% increase in just two years.
  • Unemployment is up 34% since 2023, hitting young people especially hard.
