December 19, 2025 —Pollara’s annual year-end poll shows Trump’s tariffs were the most followed news story in Canada in 2025. This was also, by a wide margin, the story that made Canadians angriest this year.
| Stories that made Canadians Angriest in 2025 | |
|---|---|
| Trump placing tariffs on Canada | 57% |
| Mark Carney becoming Prime Minister | 13% |
| The Canada Post strike | 7% |
| Charlie Kirk’s assassination | 7% |
| Wildfires across Canada this summer | 5% |
On the other side, three of the top five news stories that made Canadians happiest in 2025 were sports-related. While the Jays came inches short of a World Series title this fall, they were the runaway winner on our happiness poll.
| Stories that made Canadians Happiest in 2025 | |
|---|---|
| Blue Jays making the World Series | 35% |
| Mark Carney becoming Prime Minister | 13% |
| Canada winning the 4 Nations cup | 9% |
| A cease fire in the Israel-Hamas war | 8% |
| Oilers making the Stanley Cup finals | 6% |
Our year end poll also asked Canadians what news stories they actively searched for in 2025, and we find big age differences. Younger Canadians were significantly more likely to be searching for news about the Coldplay kiss cam, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Taylor Swift’s engagement, and the 6-7 fad. Meanwhile, older Canadians tuned in more to news about Canada-US relations and wildfires.
