Eight-in-ten Americans want Canada to follow US lead in putting tariffs on Chinese EVs

August 15, 2024 – Following President Biden placing tariffs on Chinese EVs, a new poll by Pollara of 1,500 Americans shows 80% of them feel it is important for Canada to align its trade policy on electric vehicles with the US.

Should Canada not follow suit and put tariffs on Chinese EVs, more Americans would support (43%) than oppose (32%) the United States putting retaliatory tariffs on Canada. Notably, there is cross-partisan support for these measures among both registered Republicans and Democrats:

This comes as the Canadian government consults on whether to follow the US in imposing tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. With half (48%) of Americans saying this is an important issue for them in the presidential election, the decision of the Canadian government is likely to receive attention south of the border.
