August 31, 2026 — Pollara’s Trump Tracker shows the breakdown of trade talks between Canada and the United States has had a significant impact in how Canadians feel about Prime Minister’s handling of Canada-US relations.
Overall approval of PM Carney on Canada-US relations has risen from 58% in early August to 68%. The majority of NDP (67%) and Bloc (62%) voters, as well as 40% of Conservative voters now approve of how Carney is handling the file.
Meanwhile, the share of Canadians who feel Carney has been “elbows up” in his dealings with Trump has risen from 50% to 64%.
This sentiment is driven by overwhelming support among Canadians for Carney’s handling of the recent trade talks. Eight-in-ten Canadians agree Carney did the right thing by walking away from trade negotiations (78%) and by placing retaliatory tariffs on some US goods (79%).
