June 22, 2026 — Pollara’s 4th annual “Trust in Media” study finds mixed views on how Canadians feel about the news media, with 51% tending to trust and 35% tending to distrust information provided by the news media.
There is a stark generational divide, with 65% of seniors trusting the news media compared to just 43% of 18-to-34 year olds. This marks a shift from historical Pollara polling included in this report, which shows younger people were more trusting than older people of the news media back in the 1990s.
This year’s Trust in Media study also compares media consumption and trust between Canada and the United States. We find Canadians more likely than Americans to be getting their news from traditional media, with Americans more likely to be relying on social media. Connected to this, trust in the news media is higher in Canada (51%) than in the United States (45%).
When testing specific media outlets, The Weather Network is Canada’s most trusted media organization for the fourth consecutive year (78% trusted). This study also finds high levels of trust in major Canadian TV networks CBC (71% trusted), CTV (68% trusted), and Global (65% trusted).
