New National Police Federation Survey of Albertans shows High Satisfaction with Alberta RCMP; Low Support for New Independent Police Service

August 27, 2024 – The National Police Federation (NPF) has released the results of their sixth survey of Albertans – their first since the independent Alberta police service was announced earlier this year. The new report reveals high satisfaction with policing by the Alberta RCMP as well as low engagement and support for Alberta’s new independent police service.

The survey was designed, conducted, and analysed by Pollara Strategic Insights, on behalf of the NPF. The survey was conducted amongst a randomly-selected online sample of N= 1,200 Albertans from June 14 -24, 2024. The final dataset was weighted using standard statistical techniques to ensure it accurately reflects the demographic and geographic composition of the adult general population of Alberta.

Some of the key findings include:

  • 77% of respondents, in RCMP-served communities, are satisfied with the policing service they receive.
  • 73% of respondents are satisfied with the RCMP’s response to natural disasters such as wildfires and floods.
  • 86% of respondents want to retain the RCMP, some with local improvements.
  • 84% of respondents agree that there are more important priorities in Alberta right now than changing who polices local communities.
  • 87% of respondents agree that before any changes to municipal policing, there needs to be detailed accounting of costs and impacts on service levels.
