February 11, 2025 — Pollara’s Trump tracker shows Canadians are not brushing off President Trump’s musings lightly, as only 10% feel Trump is joking about making Canada the 51st state, versus 34% who believe he’s serious and 47% who believe he’s doing it to threaten Canada as a negotiation tactic. Not surprisingly, faced with threats of annexation and tariffs, Canadians are growing more negative towards Trump, key figures in his Administration, and the United States in general.
Currently, 68% of Canadians feel negatively about the President, whereas 22% hold positive emotions. The share of Canadians angry towards Trump now sits at 51%, the highest level recorded over the past year.
Trump’s unpopularity has bled through to his entourage, with Canadians also feeling negative towards Elon Musk (positive 21% / negative 62%) and JD Vance (15% / 39%).
Feelings towards the United States as a whole continue to worsen, with more than twice as many Canadians feeling negative (63%) rather than positive (30%) about the US. This is a sharp reversal from last summer, when the majority of Canadians felt positively about our southern neighbours (positive 53% / negative 40%).
